House in Jakarta Kampoeng

Indonesian city often contain smaller communities, living and functioning much as a rural community would do. Many of these 'urban village' began spontaneously; some just after World War II, with migrants arriving from other parts of Java, or even from Sumatra, to try and earn a living as small traders in the city center. The introduction of the Kampoeng improvement Scheme has brought better infrastructure facilities and services to these urban village communities.

A pity that so many urban come to Java and live in government property,  this make a special problem lately. They already stay there for tenth years and build a permanent house there, but they must go because the availability of land become difficult and government need to build something. This problem become more and more and the solution become difficult to place them in other house. Cheap house for rent become rare this is the special problem should be solved by our government not just drive out the communities.

Life in an Urban Kampoeng

Household in urban kampoengs can be made up of very diverse group. Some of the older inhabitants are established residents who settled in the kampoengs during the 1950s and 60s. They may include married couples and their children, and relatives who live in rural villages that are within 30 to 50 kilometers of the city. These members come to work in the city when they are in need of money, and return home after a while.

Women frequently earn their living by running cooked food stalls, either on main city streets or smaller side roads. When trade is good, the stall owner may have several relatives staying with her to help her run her business. They will help carry raw food from the market, pluck chickens, dice vegetables, cook food, push the cart to its trade location, and serve customers throughout the night.

In the urban kampoeng also can found communal lodging houses with up to 20 people living in them at any one time. The tenants who use these boarding houses generally live in cramped conditions with several people sharing one small room, their few possessions stacked in suitcases, or hanging from roof beams. These men tend to come to the city on a temporary basis, and in order to channel as much money as they can back to their families, they live as cheaply and frugally as possible.
